Our firm has represented clients at all three of the large recent Commonwealth Royal Commissions – Trade Unions Royal Commission, The Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory Royal Commission and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Our lawyers prepared, instructed and appeared on behalf of over 50 clients in those various Royal Commissions. We are the only legal firm that has appeared regularly for clients at all of these Royal Commissions
We tend to act for individuals; government employees, retired and current church leaders, politicians, teachers and business owners. In the Royal Commission we had the privilege of receiving instructions from two groups of Aboriginal Elders in one case study of the child protection aspect of that Commission.
This recent engagement with Royal Commissions has resulted in our firm working constructively with the Attorney General’s Department and the Australian Government Solicitor. Our knowledge of the mechanics of the process, including the AGD funding process, enhance our legal and strategic approach to each individual’s particular circumstances.
In both the Institutional Response Royal Commission and Northern Territory Royal Commission we engaged with the community legal organizations who were tasked to provide advice and referral to individuals who received a summons. Those organizations, Knowmore and Cicaydas, worked with us in establishing and administering a panel of Melbourne based law firms who were able to accept referrals for representation.
