Kate Da Costa
Kate has practised exclusively as a criminal defence lawyer since her admission to practice in 2002. She provides legal advice and representation to clients in all criminal law jurisdictions in Victoria. Committed to suburban practice, Kate is available for in-person conferences at our Sunshine and Heidelberg offices.
Kate appears as a solicitor-advocate in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria representing clients charged with offences including:
- drink driving and traffic offences
- unlawful assault
- family violence
- drug offences
- dishonesty offences
- Centrelink fraud
- Worksafe prosecutions.
Together with her summary crime practice, Kate has the conduct of County and Supreme Court trials and pleas, and Court of Appeal matters. She regularly briefs and instructs expert Counsel, including Queen’s and Senior Counsel.
Complementing her Court work, Kate has a growing practice assisting clients with regulatory applications and submissions. She has a particular interest in assisting those clients required to respond to a Working with Children Check Assessment Notice. She also understands the restrictive nature of obligations under the Sex Offender Registration Act and assists those clients on the register seeking to make an application to suspend their reporting obligations, or an application for overseas travel.
Kate has extensive experience assisting both respondents and applicants to Family Violence and Personal Safety Intervention Order Applications. She is the co-author of our e-book Understanding Family Violence Intervention Orders and has contributed numerous blog articles on the subject including Contested Family Violence Intervention Orders and Children, and Evidence in Family Violence Intervention Orders.
