Kate Da Costa

With over to 20 years experience as a criminal defence lawyer, Kate provides legal advice and representation to clients in all criminal law jurisdictions across Victoria. Committed to suburban legal practice, Kate is based at our Sunshine office in the western suburbs.

Kate appears regularly as a solicitor-advocate in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria representing clients charged with a broad range of offences, including driving, assault, drug, dishonesty and sex cases.

A significant aspect of Kate’s practice also focuses on assisting clients facing serious indictable charges, working closely with expert Counsel during the conduct of her clients’ County and Supreme Court jury trials.

With a keen understanding of the restrictive nature of obligations under the Sex Offender Registration Act, Kate has a particular interest in assisting clients seeking suspension of their sex offender reporting obligations and overseas travel. She believes that the opportunity to represent registered offenders to apply for suspension of their reporting obligations is a crucial safeguard of civil rights, as it ensures that offenders who are genuinely low risk to the community are not subject to unnecessary restrictions on their civil liberties.

Kate takes pride in providing professional and trustworthy legal representation. She listens to her clients with care and respect as they explain their unique situation. She offers comprehensive, plain-language legal and strategic advice. She takes particular care to ensure that her clients understand their rights and options at each stage of the criminal justice system, ensuring that they are well-informed and feel fully supported during the Court process.

Kate is currently the President of the Western Suburbs Law Association.

She is a member of the Criminal Law Section of the Law Institute of Victoria, and a member of the Wyndham Law Courts Local Advisory Committee.
