Felony is a term that is mainly used in the United States of America. In Victoria the distinction that is drawn is normally between indictable and summary offences. An indictable offence is a more serious offence and is the equivalent of a felony offence. Generally there are a number of felony type offences that can be heard in the Magistrates’ Court. If it is a more serious felony offence then it will only be able to be heard in higher Courts.
