Centrelink Fraud, Plea in the Magistrates’ Court
The client had received over $57,000 in Centrelink payments over a 5 year period, to which she was not entitled. She had been receiving payments as a ‘single’ person, when she was in fact married.
The Magistrate heard submission with respect to significant difficulties in her personal life throughout that period.
The Magistrate was ultimately persuaded that an immediate term of imprisonment, despite that large amount of payments obtained, was not appropriate in the circumstances. She was sentenced to 7 months imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for a period of 12 months.
