Doogue + George Defence Lawyers was founded by one of the current directors of the firm, Bill Doogue, in 1995. Bill was a criminal lawyer at the Aboriginal Legal Service in the early 1990s when he decided to start a firm that specialises in criminal law.
The first office was established in Broadmeadows in 1995, followed by another at Melbourne CBD in 2001 and another at Heidelberg in 2008.
At the same time Andrew George was running a thriving firm, Andrew George Solicitors, undertaking a wide variety of cases in criminal law. The two firms decided to merge in February 2013.
The firm has since merged with two other law firms – Lethbridges Barristers and Solicitors in 2021 and Furstenberg Law in 2024.
Both these firms had a long history of running criminal law cases exceptionally well and handling the most complex criminal litigation. All these parts make up a whole that is a firm with vast experience and knowledge to help our clients.
Since its establishment, Doogue + George has been dealing with a variety of cases – over 47,000 prosecutions and 430 jury trials to date. These include high profile cases such as that of Abdul Nacer Benbrika in the first major terrorism trial in Australia. The firm has acted for a number of politicians including Federal and State members.
The firm has also represented the former Governor General of Australia and been involved in two cases overseas involving allegations of attempted regime change.

Doogue + George was a founding member of the Australian Defence Lawyers Alliance (ADLA), a national alliance of law firms that specialise in criminal law.
Doogue + George also has an annual conference that they run in a different State each year which criminal lawyers attend from all the States and Territories.
