Barrister & Solicitor
Speciality
- Criminal Law
- Complex Trials
Josh Taaffe is a solicitor at our Melbourne City Office and appears regularly in the Magistrates’, County and Children's Courts in Victoria. On a daily basis, he provides representation and advice for all indictable and summary charges.
Josh has extensive experience as a defence advocate, and appears regularly as a Barrister in County Court trials, pleas of not guilty and contests as well as bail applications, committal hearings, appeals, and pleas of guilty.
As an advocate Josh has specialized in indictable crime, including Sexual Offences, Violence and Drugs matters with an emphasis on Armed Robbery and Aggravated Burglary charges. As an instructing solicitor Josh has specialized in handling complex matters (such as murder trials and terrorism trials) including State and Commonwealth Supreme Court trials.
While he is interested in the art and challenges of advocacy, Josh is motivated more by the desire to protect the rights of his clients, represent their interests as strongly as possible and achieve just outcomes. These values have their foundation in his experience as an activist in the Middle-East and then in Australia in relation to refugee rights. It was during these periods that his commitment to criminal defence work was formed.
Prior to commencing employment with Doogue & O’Brien Josh worked at the Fitzroy Legal Service. His work there focused on legal policy and law reform in the areas of Police Accountability and Spent Convictions.
Josh now volunteers at the Broadmeadows Community Legal Service.
Pre-admission as a solicitor Josh travelled extensively in Asia and the Middle-East. Outside of the law his interests include rock climbing and cooking. Josh holds a first dan black belt in the Japanese martial art Aikido
