Josh Taaffe
Barrister & Solicitor

Speciality
- Criminal Law
- Complex Trials

Josh Taaffe is a solicitor at our Melbourne City Office and appears regularly in the Magistrates’, County and Children's Courts in Victoria. On a daily basis, he provides representation and advice for all indictable and summary charges.

Josh has extensive experience as a defence advocate, and appears regularly as a Barrister in County Court jury trials, pleas of not guilty and contests as well as bail applications, committal hearings, appeals, and pleas of guilty.

As an advocate Josh has specialised in indictable crime, including sexual offences, violence (assaults, armed robberies and aggravated burglaries) and drugs matters.

As a solicitor Josh has specialised in handling complex matters, such as murder and terrorism trials, including State and Commonwealth Supreme Court trials.

Josh acted for Abdul Nacer Benbrika in Victoria’s first Commonwealth prosecution of terrorism offences. The trial was one of the longest and most complex to ever come before the Courts.

Josh acted for Hugo Rich, formerly known as Olaf Dietrich in a trial in the Supreme Court that lasted nearly five months. Rich was charged with the murder of a security guard in the course of a 2005 armed robbery. The armed robbery was planned to intercept the delivery of money by an armoured van to a bank in the Blackburn North shopping centre.

It goes without saying that not every accusation is truthfully made. The burden of proof lies with the prosecutors who must prove their case beyond reasonable doubt. Josh has been involved in the following matters where charges have been withdrawn or the accused was found not guilty: While he is interested in the challenges of advocacy, Josh is motivated more by the desire to protect the rights of his clients, represent their interests as strongly as possible and achieve just outcomes. These values have their foundation in his experience as an activist in the Middle-East and then in Australia in relation to refugee rights. It was during these periods that his commitment to criminal defence work was formed.

Prior to commencing employment with Doogue & O’Brien Josh worked at the Fitzroy Legal Service. His work there focused on legal policy and law reform in the areas of Police Accountability and Spent Convictions.

Josh now volunteers at the Broadmeadows Community Legal Service.
